Scenes from Paradise, Lenore Malen’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Working with photography, video and performance, Malen creates multi-channel projections and installations that satirically explore utopian myths and the sciences and the technologies that inform them.
The planet is in jeopardy, Eden is our earth, Adam and Eve have 7 billion descendants. In Scenes from Paradise, Malen brings to life a 15th-century manuscript illumination of Eden as a multi channel video installation set in a staged environment and a performance. Copying the manuscript scene with its original characters: animal and human, she re-presents the myth of Eden as a dark comedy, reversing the roles of human and non-human animals. The story in which humans gain dominion over every living thing on earth becomes a cautionary tale made newly relevant by the ticking clock of climate change, habitat-loss, and extinction."
